At its centre sits a substantial, deep wine-red garnet cabochon, its smooth domed surface providing a striking contrast to the numerous hand-faceted garnets surrounding it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe central cabochon is framed by concentric rows of smaller garnets, culminating in a bold outer border of larger faceted stones. The close setting allows very little of the metal beneath to be seen from the front, creating the wonderfully intense, almost glowing crimson appearance for which antique Bohemian garnet jewellery is so admired.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe reverse reveals the traditional hand-constructed setting and an antique pin fitting. The brooch is mounted in an unmarked \u003cspan class=\"s2\"\u003e\u003cb\u003egold-toned metal\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan class=\"s1\"\u003e. The metal has not been tested and therefore we make no representation that it is solid gold.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eBohemian garnet jewellery became enormously fashionable during the 19th century, particularly during the Victorian era. Garnets mined in the historic region of Bohemia—now largely within the Czech Republic—were prized for their characteristic deep red colour and were frequently set closely together to maximise their richness and sparkle.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eA particularly beautiful survivor, combining the dramatic colour of Victorian garnet jewellery with an unusually prominent central cabochon.
