Victorian Silver-Plated & Cut Glass Epergne

An impressive Victorian epergne, combining an elaborately modelled silver-plated base with a beautifully cut glass trumpet vase.

The substantial base is richly decorated in the exuberant Victorian taste, with scrolling foliate detail, acanthus leaves and a wonderfully ornate central support, raised upon three decorative feet. Above sits a tall, flared cut glass trumpet with elegant geometric cutting which catches and reflects the light beautifully.

Epergnes were designed as spectacular table centrepieces and became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period. Traditionally used to display flowers, fruit and sometimes sweetmeats, they were intended to bring height and drama to a formally laid dining table.

Today, this piece would make a striking centrepiece filled with seasonal flowers, but is equally decorative displayed on its own. A wonderful example of the Victorian love of elaborate tableware and entertaining.

Period: Victorian, 19th century
Material: Silver plate and cut glass
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with its history

Heritage House Note

We particularly love antique pieces that can still be used and enjoyed today. This dramatic epergne would look magnificent at the centre of a dining table, filled with flowers for a dinner party or special occasion.

The base features beautifully cast, flowing organic scrollwork and acanthus leaves, transitioning into a floral collar that holds the glass. This highly ornate, classical design was the absolute speciality of Hawksworth, Eyre & Co who were famous across Britain for their high-end centrepieces, candelabras, and banquet tableware.

Manufactured in Sheffield, England between 1870 and 1890.

Pseudo hallmarks were often used on quality silver plate to make it look as though they were sterling silver hallmarks.
