Victorian Gold-Tone Gate Bracelet with Large Faceted Purple Stone, c.1870–1890
A wonderfully substantial and decorative Victorian gate bracelet, dating to the latter part of the 19th century, circa 1870–1890.
The bracelet is formed from multiple rows of beautifully articulated elongated links, creating the distinctive architectural appearance that gave Victorian “gate bracelets” their name. The broad construction sits impressively on the wrist while the individually joined links allow the bracelet to remain wonderfully flexible.
At its centre is an elaborate openwork plaque decorated with sweeping scrolls, stylised foliage and richly textured detailing. The design has an almost architectural quality, typical of the wonderfully elaborate jewellery produced during the Victorian period.
Taking centre stage is a large oval faceted purple-pink stone, held within a finely serrated setting. The stone catches the light beautifully, changing from deep plum and smoky mauve to warmer rose and amber tones depending upon the light. The stone has not been gemologically tested and is therefore described conservatively as glass/paste rather than a natural gemstone.
The bracelet is constructed in an attractive warm gold-tone/gilt metal, which has developed the gentle variation in colour and patina expected from an antique piece of this age. The metal is untested and is not being represented as solid gold.
Gate bracelets became particularly fashionable during the Victorian era and were often made as substantial statement pieces, their rows of interlocking links inspired by the appearance of gates and fencing. Their bold proportions and intricate construction make surviving examples wonderfully wearable today.
A fabulous piece of Victorian jewellery with real presence – dramatic enough to wear alone and particularly beautiful with evening dress or against a simple sleeve.
