Antique Georgian Tortoiseshell & Silver-Mounted Calling Card Case – Ornate Engraved Monogram

A beautiful and exceptionally elegant antique tortoiseshell calling card case, believed to date from the late Georgian to early Victorian period, circa 1830–1850.

This exquisite little case features richly patterned tortoiseshell in wonderful shades of deep chocolate brown, amber and golden honey, displaying the natural beauty and distinctive markings so highly prized in antique decorative objects.

The front is adorned with an elaborate silver-coloured cartouche, beautifully decorated with intricate scrolling foliage and engraved initials. A further decorative silver-coloured flourish embellishes the upper section, giving the piece a wonderfully refined and aristocratic appearance.

The case is finished with delicate metal edging and a horizontal band marking the fitted lid, whilst the reverse displays the uninterrupted beauty of the tortoiseshell.

Calling card cases were an essential accessory for fashionable ladies and gentlemen of Georgian and Victorian society. During an era when social etiquette was of paramount importance, visiting cards were presented or left at the homes of acquaintances as a formal introduction or acknowledgement of a social visit.

Such beautifully made cases were both practical accessories and expressions of personal taste, wealth and refinement.
