ART DECO EGYPTIAN REVIVAL STERLING SILVER AND ENAMEL PENDANT NECKLACE, CIRCA 1920s–1930s
A striking Art Deco Egyptian Revival pendant necklace in sterling silver, decorated with beautifully coloured enamel.
The pendant features the stylised face of an Egyptian pharaoh, most likely inspired by Tutankhamun, framed by a dramatic winged design. Rich cobalt blue, terracotta red and black enamel creates a bold geometric pattern, divided by fine silver outlines. An openwork section above the pharaoh’s head gives the pendant a lighter, more sculptural appearance.
Suspended beneath is a small articulated enamel drop, which moves gently when worn and adds further colour and detail to the design. The pendant is presented on a fine silver-toned snake chain.
Egyptian Revival jewellery became enormously fashionable following the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb by Howard Carter in 1922. Ancient Egyptian imagery strongly influenced the decorative arts of the period, working particularly well with the rich colours, symmetry and geometric forms of Art Deco design.
The reverse is stamped “STERLING SILVER” together with a maker’s mark.
A wonderfully decorative and highly wearable example of Egyptian Revival jewellery, combining the glamour of Art Deco with the enduring mystery of ancient Egypt.
