Large Edwardian Silver-Plated Gallery Tray on Copper
A wonderfully impressive Edwardian silver-plated gallery tray, dating to the early 20th century and made with a substantial copper base beneath the silver plate.
This is a particularly handsome example, with its generous rectangular form softened by elegant canted corners. The tray is surrounded by a beautifully pierced gallery, with elongated vertical detailing and four integral shaped carrying handles incorporated into the sides. Raised on charming rounded ball feet, it has both presence and practicality.
The silver-plated surface has developed the gentle signs of age and use that we love to see in antique tableware, while glimpses of the copper beneath the plate add warmth and character and tell the story of a piece that has been enjoyed for generations.
Large gallery trays such as this were designed for entertaining and serving, and today it would make a magnificent centrepiece for a drinks table. Style it with crystal decanters and glasses, use it for champagne and cocktails, or fill it with treasured objects on a coffee table or ottoman. Its scale also makes it wonderful for entertaining when carrying drinks from room to room.
A beautiful piece of Edwardian country-house tableware and exactly the sort of useful antique that works just as well in a contemporary home as it would have done over a century ago.
