Victorian Bohemian Garnet Cabochon Cluster Brooch, c.1860–1890
A wonderfully rich and dramatic antique Bohemian garnet brooch dating from the Victorian period, circa 1860–1890.
The brooch is beautifully constructed in the traditional layered cluster style associated with 19th-century Bohemian garnet jewellery. At its centre sits a substantial, deep wine-red garnet cabochon, its smooth domed surface providing a striking contrast to the numerous hand-faceted garnets surrounding it.
The central cabochon is framed by concentric rows of smaller garnets, culminating in a bold outer border of larger faceted stones. The close setting allows very little of the metal beneath to be seen from the front, creating the wonderfully intense, almost glowing crimson appearance for which antique Bohemian garnet jewellery is so admired.
The reverse reveals the traditional hand-constructed setting and an antique pin fitting. The brooch is mounted in an unmarked gold-toned metal. The metal has not been tested and therefore we make no representation that it is solid gold.
Bohemian garnet jewellery became enormously fashionable during the 19th century, particularly during the Victorian era. Garnets mined in the historic region of Bohemia—now largely within the Czech Republic—were prized for their characteristic deep red colour and were frequently set closely together to maximise their richness and sparkle.
A particularly beautiful survivor, combining the dramatic colour of Victorian garnet jewellery with an unusually prominent central cabochon. Equally striking worn on a jacket, velvet ribbon or evening dress, and a wonderful addition to a collection of antique jewellery.
