Antique Victorian Green Shagreen Spectacle Case with Original Glasses – 19th Century
A wonderfully unusual and highly decorative Victorian shagreen spectacle case, complete with its original folding spectacles, dating to the 19th century.
This beautiful antique case is covered entirely in richly coloured green shagreen, displaying the distinctive natural pebble-like texture associated with ray skin. The wonderful variations of emerald, sage and sea green create an almost jewel-like appearance, making this a particularly striking example.
The elongated case has an elegant rounded shape, with a hinged domed lid and metal mounts that have developed a lovely antique patina over time.
Opening the case reveals the original folding spectacles, with their delicate metal frames and tinted lenses, neatly housed within the fitted interior.
A Little History
Shagreen has been prized for centuries as a luxurious decorative material, traditionally produced from the skin of rays or sharks. Its distinctive textured surface made it particularly desirable for covering small personal accessories, including spectacle cases, jewellery boxes, writing instruments and travelling necessities.
During the Georgian and Victorian periods, shagreen was associated with fine craftsmanship and fashionable personal possessions. Its popularity continued into the Art Deco era, when its unusual texture and beautiful colours were particularly admired.
This charming case offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of personal accessories and eyewear, combining practicality with the decorative craftsmanship of a bygone age.
