Victorian Silver-Plated Calling Card Tray

A beautifully decorative Victorian silver-plated calling card tray, dating from the late 19th century.

Of elegant shaped circular form, the tray features a finely engraved centre with elaborate scrolling foliate and paisley-style decoration. The raised scalloped border is finished with delicate beading and ornate foliate details, giving the piece a wonderfully refined appearance.

Calling card trays were an important feature of the Victorian home, traditionally placed in the entrance hall to receive the visiting cards of guests. Calling cards formed part of the elaborate social etiquette of the period, with cards often being handed to a servant or left on a tray when making a formal visit.

Today, this charming piece makes a beautiful decorative accessory. Perfect for displaying jewellery, keys or small treasures on a hall table or dressing table, or simply styled as part of a collection of antique silver.
