Antique Victorian Silver-Plated Calling Card Tray by William Hutton & Sons – Circa 1890–1910

A beautifully decorative late Victorian to early Edwardian silver-plated calling card tray, or miniature salver, attributed to the renowned British silversmiths William Hutton & Sons, dating to circa 1890–1910.

This charming little tray features an exquisitely engraved surface, with intricate floral garlands, delicate scrolling foliage and repeating geometric motifs arranged in an elegant, symmetrical design.

The beautifully detailed engraving is framed by an ornamental border of circular rosettes and decorative scrollwork, while the raised outer rim is finished with a classical beaded edge.

Standing on delightful little decorative feet, this miniature salver is a wonderful example of the craftsmanship and attention to detail associated with quality Victorian silver plate.

William Hutton & Sons was a highly respected British manufacturer of silver and silver-plated wares, established in 1800 and subsequently based in Sheffield, one of England’s most important centres of silver production.

The underside bears the manufacturer’s initials WH & S, alongside additional trade marks and the words HARD SOLDERED, referring to the method of construction.

Originally intended for presenting visiting cards in a Victorian drawing room, these little trays were an essential part of the social etiquette of the period. Visitors would leave their calling cards to announce their arrival or record a visit, with cards often presented to the lady of the house.

Today, this delightful little salver would make a beautiful decorative addition to a dressing table, hallway console or occasional table. Perfect for displaying jewellery, holding treasured trinkets or simply enjoyed as a charming piece of Victorian social history.

A wonderful example of how even the smallest everyday objects were once made with extraordinary attention to detail.
