Victorian Sterling Silver & Paste Swallow Brooch
A charming Victorian sterling silver brooch, beautifully modelled as a swallow in flight and set throughout with sparkling clear paste stones.
Swallows were a particularly sentimental motif in Victorian jewellery, traditionally representing love, loyalty, faithfulness and the promise of a safe return home. Their migratory nature and tendency to return to the same nesting place made them an enduring symbol of devotion, and swallow jewellery was often given as a romantic token.
The bird is wonderfully detailed, with its characteristic forked tail, outstretched wings and individually set faceted paste stones designed to imitate the brilliance of diamonds. The silver setting has developed the attractive character and patina expected of an antique piece.
Period: Victorian, late 19th century
Material: Sterling silver
Stones: Clear faceted paste
Design: Swallow in flight
Fastening: Brooch pin to reverse
Measurements: 3.5 x 2cm
Condition: Good antique condition with age-related wear and patina consistent with its period. Please refer to photographs for full condition.
A wonderfully romantic piece of Victorian jewellery, beautiful worn on a jacket lapel, scarf or dress and equally appealing as a collectable example of Victorian sentimental jewellery.
